About the Artist
Jesselle Sue is an Asian-American abstract artist whose work moves between Eastern aesthetics, Chinese ink painting, and contemporary material painting.
She works with liquid pigments, Chinese ink, mineral textures, and raw canvas, allowing images to slowly emerge through staining, washing, absorption, and time. For her, painting is a quiet conversation with nature, memory, and the self.
Her process is intuitive and free. Tea, wine, whiskey, ash, footsteps, and accidental gestures may become part of the surface. Rather than beginning with a fixed subject, she lets forms appear naturally — sometimes as landscapes, figures, animals, or fragments of memory.
Drawn to the silence and negative space of Chinese ink painting, as well as the strange freedom of Western abstraction, her work forms a personal language between nature, emotion, and material.

【Artist Statement 】
My work explores the space between abstraction, memory, and material transformation. Through layered pigments, mineral textures, stains, washes, and raw canvas, I create surfaces that feel eroded, weathered, and quietly alive. The paintings often suggest fog, distant mountains, mineral deposits, abstract figures, animals, or fragments of remembered forms, while remaining open and abstract.
Rooted in an East Asian sensitivity to silence, negative space, and impermanence, my practice is also deeply process-based. Each work is formed through pouring, soaking, scraping, absorption, accident, and time. Rather than depicting fixed subjects, I allow the materials to behave like nature — to settle, stain, decay, and reveal what remains.
